Hyundai Motor Company recently announced the launch of its new IONIQ brand dedicated to battery electric vehicles. Under the IONIQ brand, the company will offer customer centric EV experiences in line with their ‘Progress for Humanity’ vision.
Under the IONIQ brand, three new dedicated models over the next four years will be introduced. Hyundai is taking the bold step to set aside its focus on the EV market. Plus to look ‘secksy’ and stand apart from the Hyundai name.
To fulfill the IONIQ brand mission, Hyundai will combine its current EV capabilities. Ultra-fast charging, spacious interior, and battery-supplied power – with future innovations that combine design, technologies and services to integrate in-car and out-of-car experiences for a seamless journey.
Rebirth of IONIQ
The IONIQ brand is not new, as it has been previously used for a project focused on eco-friendly mobility. Back in 2016 Hyundai introduced a vehicle named IONIQ. This was the world’s first and only model to offer a choice of three electrified powertrain options – hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid and battery electric – within a single body type.
IONIQ 5 / IONIQ 6 / IONIQ 7
Making it easier on customers the vehicles will be numerically named with SUVs being odd and sedans even. The three models to launch first will be the IONIQ 5, 6, and 7.
The first to launch in 2021 will be the IONIQ 5; a mid-sized cross-over vehicle, based on the EV ‘45’ concept which was unveiled at the Frankfurt International Motor Show last year. In 2022, Hyundai will introduce IONIQ 6 sedan, which is based on the company’s latest concept EV ‘Prophecy’, unveiled in March; followed by IONIQ 7, a large SUV in early 2024.
Likewise, IONIQ vehicles’ designs will have a common theme of ‘Timeless Value’. The vehicles will be inspired by past models, but they will be a bridge to the future.
IONIQ brand models will sit on an Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that will enable fast charging capability and lots of driving range.
The EV-dedicated platform will allow Hyundai to re-imagine the vehicle interior as “smart living space” with highly adjustable seats, wireless connectivity and unique features such as a glove box designed as drawers.
London Eye Event: IONIQ Campaign
Hyundai celebrated the launch of IONIQ by turning the London Eye into a giant letter “Q” using electric lights just before the official reopening of the famous attraction.
