Abu Dhabi launches electric buses with world’s fastest charging batteries

Yinlong Eletric Bus

Today, Emirates Global Motor Electric, Al Fahim Group and Yinlong Energy, launhed the environment-friendly Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) Electric buses in the UAE, a first for the region. Why is this interesting? Well, the LTO electric buses can be charged in under 20 minutes! That’s fully charged mind you. I had to ask them the question to actually confirm that it was fully charged, and the answer was in 10 to 20 minutes the bus will be fully charged. Now, being a hefty piece of metal to move, the range given is only around 100 kilometers. Thinking back to my days (decades ago) of riding the bus, that’s more than enough to cover a certain route at least once.

The LTO battery is the safest Lithium-ion battery in the world with the longest life span of over 25 years making it the most advanced lithium-ion battery available in the market today. During the virtual event today, we were shown videos of just how safe the batteries are. Two tests showed the battery being sawed and drilled, and when I went to grab my popcorn in anticipation of an explosion, none. The third test that we were shown is the video was doused in Kerosene and lit on fire. The battery didn’t explode in the video. But it does after 48 minutes if kept lit. That is way more than enough time for any scene of a severe accident to be evacuated.

Good news for your lungs. Replacing just one diestel bus with an electric bus is the equivalent to reducing harmful emissions from 27 passenger cars driven for one year.

Speaking at the event, Mohammed Abdulla Abdul Jaleel AL Fahim, Group Head Business Development from ALFAHIM commented, “Abu Dhabi has always been a pioneer in incorporating state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly technologies into its infrastructure and operations. Nowhere is this more apparent than in its public transport services. We at Al Fahim are committed to investing resources to implement as well as accelerate the sustainability agenda of the UAE leadership. We are proud to play a pioneering role in the roll out of the green fleet of buses in the UAE.”

Representing Yinlong Energy, Susan Lam, Vice President said, “We are thrilled to help bring our LTO electric buses to the UAE. Our LTO battery charges in minimal time – making it the fastest charging battery in the world, and we are excited to bring this premier technology to the Middle East.

“With the new bus fleet set to be rolled out across the rest of the Middle East following the launch, we are confident that this will transform public transportation in the region.”

ALFAHIM is one of the UAE’s most successful family businesses.
